    Open Burning Rules

    Please review these rules for open burning. 

    • An annual permit is required to kindle or maintain any outside (open) burning that is not in an authorized container. Burn permits must be renewed each calendar year beginning January 1st. Burn Permits are available online at www.nocfa.org
    • Burning permits are only granted to the owner of the property on which the burning is taking place. The property owner is solely responsible for any open burning and any illegal burning violations that may incur on their property.
    • You must call and activate your burn permit each day you plan on burning. Permit activation expires at dusk each day.
    • No open burning shall be allowed on any property used for commercial purposes.
    • Agricultural or Ground Burning is prohibited unless a special land management permit has been issued.
    • Open burning shall be constantly attended by a competent person until such fire is completely extinguished. The person shall have the proper fire extinguishing equipment readily available: shovels, garden hose, extinguisher, ETC.
    • All open burning must be extinguished by dark with the exception of recreational fires such as camp fires and small bon fires. These types of fires must be in a pit & should be no larger than 3ft. x 3ft. Camp Fires do not require a permit.
    • Any persons found in violation of the ordinance are liable for all damages resulting there from, including the cost of firefighting equipment and manpower.
    • No open burning shall be allowed within 50’ of any combustible structure, combustible material, combustible wall or partition, heavy vegetation areas, exterior window opening or exit access.
    • No open burning shall be allowed in or on any public road or right- of- way.
    • No open burning shall be allowed on any property within 1400’ of the municipal boundaries of any incorporated city or village.
    • Items permissible to burn are: Brush, dry grass clippings, trees or tree trimmings, logs, shrubbery, leaves and other natural wood or vegetative matter.
    • Burning shall not cause a nuisance to neighbors.
    • Burning of any petroleum products such as plastic, tires & roofing material is prohibited.
    • Burning of rubbish, garbage, household waste, treated lumber & construction & demolition materials is prohibited.
    • The Fire Chief or his designee may revoke, suspend or deny a burn permit at any given time and may issue fines for illegal burning.
    • For the complete open burning ordinances visit the North Oakland County Fire Authority Web Site. At www.nocfa.org and click on your Township’s Ordinance’s.
    • NO BURNING IS PERMITTED WHEN:
    • Wind conditions for the day are forecasted to be sustained winds above 15 MPH or gusting over 20 MPH per the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Check www.noaa.gov for daily weather conditions.
    • When calling to activate your permit for the day the voice recording indicates that there are no permits being issued.
